'RISK REWARD & RAW POWER': Nathan Florence’s Late Drop at The Eddie 2024
Nathan Florence’s incredible late drop during the 2024 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational was a defining moment that highlighted both his skill and bravery in one of the world’s most dangerous surf events. It wasn’t his first wave of the day, but the drop he made - seemingly impossible - was a perfect example of the kind of risk big wave surfers take.
The Eddie isn’t just a competition; it’s a celebration of those who dare to ride the biggest waves on earth and for Nathan, it was an opportunity to embrace the culture, the legacy, and the respect for Eddie Aikau that defines the event.
Watching that drop unfold live through my lens, was nothing short of surreal, a moment that captured the spirit of The Eddie: a deep respect for the ocean, an unspoken bond between surfer and wave and the high-stakes challenge of conquering monster waves.
Reflecting on the day, Nate couldn’t have asked for a better start to his Eddie experience: "My first Eddie, couldn’t have had a better day."
